Data Deletion

Whale Spotter does not require an account. Sightings are first stored on your device, and uploaded sightings may be stored in the Whale Spotter database for community, conservation, and research use.
Delete Sightings From Your Device
You can delete sightings stored locally on your phone from inside the Whale Spotter app. Deleting the app from your device also removes local app data stored on that device.
Request Deletion of Uploaded Data
To request deletion of uploaded sightings or photos, email us at whalespotter_app@proton.me with the subject line Data deletion request.
Please include enough information for us to locate the record:
- Approximate date and time of the sighting.
- Species selected, if known.
- Approximate location or area.
- Whether a photo was attached.
What We Delete
When we can identify the uploaded record, we will remove the sighting and associated photo from active Whale Spotter systems where practical. We may retain aggregated, anonymized, or backup records for a limited period where deletion is not technically immediate or where retention is needed for security, legal, or audit reasons.
Response Time
We aim to respond to deletion requests as soon as reasonably possible. If we need more information to identify the sighting, we will ask you for the minimum extra detail needed.
