A few things people ask

What is Whale Spotter?

Whale Spotter is a free little app made for people spending time on the water in Timor-Leste. It helps you recognise the whales, dolphins and other marine life you might see, learn a bit more about them, and keep a record of your own sightings.

Who made it?

I did. Whale Spotter is an independent, self-funded project I built because I love what happens around Timor-Leste every whale season. I thought it would be great if people could get a little more from their time on the water and, together, we could build a better picture of what’s being seen here.

Is it free?

Completely free. It’s available for iPhone and Android, with no subscription and no account to set up.

Why should I download it before heading out?

Have a look through the species you might see before you go and get familiar with what to look for. Then, when you’re out on the water, Whale Spotter is there when you want to learn a little more or record what you spotted.

Will it work when I’m out on the water?

Yes. You can browse the field guide and log a sighting even without a signal. Your sightings are saved on your phone first and uploaded when you next have a connection.

What can I do with it?

Browse the field guide, learn about the whales, dolphins and other marine life found around Timor-Leste, use the identification information to help work out what you’re seeing, and log your own sightings with a location, notes and a photo if you have one.

Do I need to know exactly what I saw?

Not at all. Whale Spotter is there to help you work it out. Log what you think you saw, add a note or photo if you can, and enjoy the moment.

Can I add a photo?

Yes, but you don’t have to. If you managed to get a photo, you can add it to your sighting. If not, your sighting is still useful without one.

What happens to my sightings?

They stay in your own sighting log in the app, giving you a record of what you saw and where you saw it. When sightings are shared anonymously, they also help build a bigger picture of what’s being seen around Timor-Leste throughout the season.

Is my information private?

There’s no account to create, and Whale Spotter doesn’t ask for your name or email address. Sightings are shared anonymously, and you can choose not to include a location or photo.

Why collect all these sightings?

One sighting tells the story of someone’s day on the water. Put lots of those individual sightings together and we can start to build a much better picture of what’s being seen around Timor-Leste throughout the whale season.

Can I use Whale Spotter if I’m not on a whale-watching trip?

Absolutely. If you’re diving, sailing, fishing or just spending time on the water around Timor-Leste and spot something, you can use Whale Spotter.

How can a tour operator or dive centre help?

The easiest way is to share Whale Spotter with guests before they head out. I’ve also made posters and table cards for operators who would like them. If you’d like some, just get in touch.
